Don’t move anything in C:\Program Files or C:\Windows, or any other program or OS files. You can move your own data (My Documents, My Pictures, etc.) to the drive. If necessary, you can also uninstall programs and reinstall them on the drive, though they’ll run slower. Dragging and dropping programs will not work in many cases because old references will be in the registry.

In theory you can use a program moving software like PickMeApp to package some of your least used programs and store them on your external drive. Then uninstall them to free space and deploy the package back when you need them.
It’s a risky way though. Easier way to do the same will be to temporary move program folders from C:\program files to the external drive. That will stop programs from working but if they are not run automatically during your computer start – your OS will not notice that the folders are missing until you try to run the program.
Both ways above recommended only if you are VERY pressed with disk space and can’t reinstall the programs on external drive.
