a .rar file is a compressed file sort of like a .zip you will need

WinRAR for XP or as a matter of fact it works with anything. 95-XP
    you can download it at
    then click on:

WinRAR 3.61 Graphic and command line

And there you go :) – Chris

To create rar archive, you will need winrar which is not free.
But here is the good news. You can open rar file without winrar.

the best free compression software is izarc(http://www.download.com/IZArc/3000-2250-10072925.html?part=dl-IZArc&subj=dl&tag=button ).

It is the most powerful and can open almost any format in the world!

Isn’t it cute. Enjoy and don’t think of paying for winrar as many other will recommend.

WinRAR. I think you might have to pay for that though. I’m not sure. If that’s the case, ZipGenius is a free program and I think that opens RAR files.
