What do I need to publish an eBook?

I would like to publish an eBook. However, I have no idea what I need to do other than to write the content. What kind of software do I need to do this? Any information would be greatly appreciated

If you want to do it on your own, Adobe is the best software but expensive.
You can use Lulu.com — they will publish it at no cost to you and you don’t need software other than a Word program, but you have to be able to figure out formatting issues. They have help available.

The open ebook format is just HTML. If you want it in Adobe (a PDF file), you can format a book for free at the Adobe website. A lot of folks will not buy Adobe ebooks though. The HTML files are vastly more popular because they can be read on any computer and translated into the proper format for a palm computer.
You’ll have to copyright the book yourself and get an ISBN number before a bookstore will carry a self-published book.
