The Amazon Kindle isn’t available to India, see the question “Is Kindle available to customers outside the United States?” here:
So even if you can get the device, it will be a headache to get the books on it, as you still need a US credit card and shipping address with your Amazon account in order to get the books.
I’ll suggest you to go for the Sony Reader instead, which is the best alternative of the Kindle. There is a good review here:
You may get the device from Amazon too. They provide international shipping at a reasonable price.

Mobileread’s “Which one should I Buy?” forum at regularly discusses the pros and cons of the different readers.
The Kindle’s whispernet doesn’t work outside of the US, and they won’t directly sell it out of the US. (It’s available; people have had US friends buy them and then ship them over. But it’s a hassle.)
The Sony is shipable, but their ebook store won’t work for non-US purchases. (I think the Kindle also won’t sell ebooks outside of the US.)
The Sony has two slots for memory cards; the Kindle only has internal memory.
It’s a big purchase–take some time to look over all the features and decide which is best for you. You might decide a different ebook reader, like the Cybook or Aztak, is just as good for you.
